Chapter 6

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

Nearly one year after the divorce, Claire received an unexpected invitation.

Ryan and Lily were celebrating the twins’ first birthday.

Claire almost threw the invitation away.

Then she noticed a handwritten sentence from Lily.

You don't owe us anything. I just wanted to say thank you—and I'm sorry.

Claire attended.

Not for Ethan.

For closure.

When she arrived, the gathering was modest.

No expensive restaurant.

No extravagant decorations.

Ryan had rented a small community room.

He looked exhausted.

But different.

“Claire.”

“Ryan.”

He swallowed.

“I owe you an apology.”

Claire waited.

“For everything.”

He glanced toward his children.

“I thought people helping me meant I deserved help.”

His voice cracked.

“When it stopped, I was angry. Then I realized I didn't even know how much you had done.”

Claire nodded.

“Take care of your children, Ryan.”

“I will.”

Across the room, Ethan was helping George carry chairs.

George noticed Claire.

His expression stiffened.

For a moment, Claire saw the old arrogance returning.

Then George looked at Ethan.

Perhaps he remembered that his son would no longer defend him automatically.

George lowered his eyes.

“Claire.”

She waited.

“I treated you badly.”

It wasn't eloquent.

It wasn't enough to erase five years.

But it was the first apology he had ever given her.

“I know,” Claire said.

Ethan approached later.

“You didn't know I was coming, did you?” Claire asked.

“No.”

“Would you have invited me?”

“No.”

She looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because I wouldn't put you in a position where you felt pressured to forgive anyone.”

Claire stared at him.

There it was.

The choice.

The one he should have made years earlier.

Protecting her peace even when it gave him nothing.

They stepped outside.

“You've changed,” Claire said.

“I had to.”

“For me?”

Ethan shook his head.

“For myself.”

Claire smiled.

A genuine smile this time.

“Good.”

They talked for nearly an hour.

Not about reconciliation.

About life.

Work.

Books.

The twins.

The ridiculous coffee shop where they had once had their second date.

When Claire finally left, Ethan didn't ask when he would see her again.

But two days later, Claire sent him a message.

Coffee Saturday?

Ethan stared at the screen for a long time.

Then typed:

I'd like that.
